Mens Volleyball: Warrior beat Lewis in Four

Posted Jan 11, 2003

Hawaii completes the series sweep of the Flyers with a four game win.

The University of Hawaii Warrior volleyball team knew that Lewis was a better team then they showed in Wednesday’s match, and they were right as Hawaii (2-0) defeated the Flyers (0-2) in four, 37-35, 30-22, 25-30, 30-24 Friday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Flyers pushed Hawaii to the limit in the first game before Hawaii pulled out an exciting 37-35 win.

Gaining momentum from the game one victory, Hawaii cruised to a 30-22 win in the second game and headed to the between games intermission with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

However, in the third, Lewis showed why they are considered one of the favorites in MIVA as they out played UH and won 30-25, forcing a fourth game.

The Warriors came out for the fourth game and quickly established the tempo with four straight points on the way to the 30-24 win and the four game victory.

Middle blocker Delano "The Beast" Thomas continued his torrid beginning to his sophomore season with 16 kills and 13 blocks. Costas Theocharidis and Tony Ching each had 18 kills and Eyal Zimet put down 11 kills.

Fabiano Barreto paced the Flyer offense with a match high 24 kills.

The Warriors return to action on Thursday as they host the Outrigger Classic. UH will take on Penn State. Ball State and Shanghai of China will also participate.
